Martial Arts Studies publishes the highest quality academic work on any aspect of martial arts studies. It aspires to stimulate and enrich the development of research and scholarship in martial arts studies by publishing the highest quality interdisciplinary work in the emergent field.

All articles are evaluated and reviewed by experts in the field to ensure the quality of each publication

Open Access

The journal is ‘open access’ and published under a Creative Commons licence which means free for both the reader and the writer

Call for papers

Martial Arts Studies invites academic articles of 5,000 to 10,000 words on a wide range of martial arts studies, especially those focusing on social, cultural, political, historical and economic issues relating to martial arts.

Also welcome are review articles of a similar length that offer detailed engagement with themes, issues and problematics pertinent to martial arts studies arising from academic literature and publications.

Submissions of both types will be anonymised and sent out for double blind peer review before they can be considered for publication.

The journal also invites book reviews and conference or seminar reports relevant to the field.

The Editorial Team

Martial Arts Studies is produced by a dedicated team that is committed to providing the highest quality publication in this area of studies.

Martial Arts Studies was founded by Paul Bowman and Benjamin N. Judkins, who are both established academics, respected scholars and experienced practitioners of martial arts. Their shared aim is to stimulate and publish the highest quality scholarship in martial arts studies.

The team is completed by the designer Hugh Griffiths, and the assistance of an eminent international editorial advisory panel, made up of academic experts from a wide range of disciplines from universities all across the world.

In light of this combined expertise and creative energy, the journal was signed by the innovative publisher of cutting edge open access scholarship, Cardiff University Press.
